I’m only living in this room for the next 6 months, but it currently has less personality than a prison cell. I can’t paint the walls and I can’t really afford to buy new furniture, especially since I’ll be leaving it all behind once I move on. My imagination is failing me (possibly due to complete lack of inspiration in my surroundings!) so I thought I’d ask for ideas on here. Here’s a description of my room:
fairly big: I’d guess around 20 square meters. Floor is wooden: medium/light brown. it’s quite a high ceiling and all the walls are white. there is a big table/desk, about 2mx1m, of adjustable height. it’s white, too, except the legs which are medium/light brown wood, like the floor. the desk is home stuck-together, and the ‘legs’ are not a pretty sight, full of screws and holes and things. There is a white shelf balanced on top of the white radiator. There is a plain double bed with minimalistic headboard (in, you guessed it, medium/light brown wood). There’s also a small chest in the same colour, which I’m currently using as a bedside table. one wall is more or less completely taken up by a massive cupboard. there are no handles or anything on it, because it is a rolly open thing, so it’s really just an entire wall full of medium brown coloured wood pattern panels. the door is white, the window (on the wall opposite the cupboard wall) is the size of two patio doors but isn’t much of a feature in a room this big, and it’s hidden behind thin dark purple/brown curtains on a very flimsy rail. There are three desk lamps spotted around the room, all white shades with metal stems.
I bought some colourful patterned wrapping paper to stick on the wall like a poster and it looked good but it looked so stupid by itself that I’ve since taken it back down again. I have some photos of friends and family that I’d like to put up but, again, they look a bit silly just stuck by themselves in the middle of a massive plain white wall. I don’t have a mirror but I’ve seen a cheap full-length one in Ikea which I could perhaps decorate the frame of to make it look less cheap and cheerless. What on earth can I do to inject personality into this room without spending a fortune?!
